Rocket fired from Egypt’s Sinai into Israel, army says

Militants in Egypt’s restive Sinai peninsula fired a rocket into southern Israel on Friday, causing no casualties, an Israeli military source said.

Sirens were heard in parts of southern Israel as the rocket landed in an open field, causing no damage.

Sinai, where Egyptian forces are battling Islamic State (IS) militants, borders both Israel and the Gaza Strip.

Another source quoted by Reuters said the military was still checking whether the rocket was fired from Sinai or the Palestinian enclave.

Palestinian militants have fired rockets in the past few weeks over the Gaza border into Israel, which has largely been quiet since the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist group which controls Gaza.
